Morgan Johnson (‘24), who identifies as queer, discussed the university's culture. They noted that while their personal experience was neither overly positive nor negative, many peers faced significant difficulties.
“As a queer student, I didn’t necessarily have an exceedingly good or bad experience with the Vanderbilt culture,” Johnson said. “I have friends that had remarkably bad experiences but by nature of being marginalized, I think we created a community that was solid. Although the administration and Nashville weren’t very supportive of trans students, they were still able to find each other on campus and love and care for each other.”
Isa Frazcek (‘24), a first-generation college student and External Affairs Coordinate of FirstVU, stated that she felt that organizations like FirstVU offered students outlets for community and knowledge about the university’s financial resources available to them.
“If you’re in some sort of minority group or are low income, it’s important to talk to people that might have had similar experiences to you or who are similar to you in general,” Frazcek said. “That’s why joining those organizations is so important.”
